Happy Chinese New Year 2018

The past year showed as what a fire-rooster can be up to. Now time has come to say ‘good bye’ and to welcome the ruler of the new year.

On 16th February 2018, 21:28h GMT, the earth-dog takes over to rule over time and space.

Looking at the personality of the dog gives us an impression of what the new year will be like: reserved, persuasive, prudent, faithful, responsible, considerate, straight forward, creative, cynical, and occasionally obstinate. We really may be looking forward to experiencing this very interesting mixture that will show us the human skills of this pack animal.

Those who know what it is like to live in a close companionship know what encourages a peaceful life and what leads to unneccessary friction among the members of that group. Ideally everyone knows his or her place in that community and when time has come to bring about changes he or she will step forward and take action. Nobody else will be sent forward, no hiding behind somebody’s back. For some people stepping forward can be quite a challenge because they may not be clear about what they really want or need or may not be able to be true to themselves. But this year will bring relief, the dog will lead the way.

There may be occasions when the leader of a pack is challenged to resign his position. If the self-appointed successor is able to prove even against resistance that he is much better suited for the position the former leader will make place and will settle down at his new position.

During the whole process it is absolutely clear what is going on. No scheming, no covering up, no smoke screens, no secret alliances. It looks as if the pack on four paws can handle those situations much better than the herd on two legs. Why not take our cue from that?!
The earth-dog in particular is a talented and astute creature working always methodically and efficiently. He is kind and generous offering a helping hand whenever one is needed.

Being rather quiet he does not make a fuss about his own affairs. With his persuasive manner he usually secures his objectives without too much opposition.

This year we should allow us to spend more time with and for ourselves, enjoying our interests, enjoying everything we have achieved so far. We should be sharing that with those we love and those we like. Doing that we give hope and strength to carry on to those who need that.

We can see the dog as symbol for intelligence and protection. People who feel socially discriminated will probably demand radical changes to their life conditions and they might even be ready to fight for their rights, for a life worth living, for now and for the future.

Relationships and success in business get new qualities depending on the way we communicate with each other. We will soon find out that being generous and unselfish gives us what we can really gain from. Improving healthcare and public health, welfare, caring for others, social skills, education and training are issues the dog wants us to deal with. Empathy and social justice are the only things that count when the earth-dog rules over us.

The earth-dog provides us with the element of earth in its Yang form, not just a hill or a single mountain, rather a mountain range or generally speaking all the ‘earth’ we can set foot on. So this year should become a year in which we pay back the favours we received when exploiting natural resources. Hopefully those in charge in politics and industry feel encouraged to reduce pollution, to initiate reafforestation and go deeper into research and implementation of renewable energies.

Now let’s see what the year of the earth-dog may bring to the various signs of the zodiac:

Dog(*) (1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018):
Birds of a feather flock together. This gives strength and courage to take matters even further. A successful year is waiting for you. Taking proper action lets even a delicate little plant become a big tree.
The dragon-month, 04 April 2018 – 05 May 2018, will be a tough test for your patience. The ‘rabbit’ can show you how to dodge and turn corners.

Pig(*) (1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007):
This year will be stable and unwinding. There will be no considerable ups and there will be no downs worth mentioning. Becoming modest can get you far further than you think.

Do not expect much from the month of the snake, 05 May 2018 – 05 June 2018. It helps to be in the company of a ‘tiger’.

Rat(*) (1900, 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008):
Although horses are definitely more exhausting than dogs things may not run as smoothly as you wish. If you throw in the towel, will there be one left to get you dry after having taken a shower? Calculated optimism is what gets you through the year.
The month of the horse, 05 June 2018 – 07 July 2018, should not be used for far reaching decisions or to settle financial matters. The ‘ox’ is always a good companion.

Ox(*) (1901, 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009):
This year many people seem to be dressed up for mayhem and madness. Remaining patient it is you who can manage to bring things into the right order. As soon as one matter is settled the next one may come up. Keep calm and carry on.
The month of the goat, 07 July 2018 – 07 August 2018, should be used to relax, important activities won’t bear fruit. Ox is advised to seek the company of ‘rats’.

Tiger(*) (1902, 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010):
How relaxing it can be to meet an ally. Your status improves, things run smoother than they did last year. Be mindful what you spend your money on or who you support.
A special challenge will be the month of the monkey, 07 August 2018 – 07 September 2018. Do what you know best and gather momentum for the rest of the year. A ‘pig’ should be your favoured friend and helper.

Rabbit(*) (1903, 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011):
Expect a pleasant year. Your good friend, the dog, takes good care of you so that you can recover completely from the difficulties you were facing recently. Your career requires more attention. Your preferred method of choice should be diplomacy.
The time between 07 September 2018 and 08 October 2018, the month of the rooster, demands withdrawal in all fields. A ‘dog’ is a trustworthy friend at all times.

Dragon(*) (1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012):
You should get ready for a year that can be a little uncomfortable. “Forward march! Beat retreat!” can be the best thing to do in times when your arch-rival is in command, which actually is the whole year. Be careful who you place your trust in.
In the month of the dog, 08 October 2018 – 07 November 2018, you might encounter even more challenging obstacles. If possible avoid disputes at all costs, at least keep them to an absolute minimum. Remain true to yourself and concentrate on your strength. If you need assistance ask the ‘rooster’.

Snake(*) (1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013):
It is not always opportune to express ones personal point of view. ‘I do not express what I think but what I say is what I think’ gets you furthest this year. It is the right time for new endeavours as opportunities for advancement come up.
The month of the pig, 07 November 2018 – 07 December 2018, is best used for relaxation and withdrawal. See to it that you have a ‘monkey’ at your side.

Horse(*) (1906, 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014):
Being an ally of the dog will present you an exceptionally good year. Success in business, success in academic affairs, reaching goals . . . you name it. Who could ask for more?! Influential people may come up with more possibilities for advancement.
The month of the rat, 07 December 2018 – 05 January 2019, will be quite challenging. Being in the company of a ‘goat’ helps to take things more easily.

Goat(*) (1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015):
To be left in the lurch can be as annoying as it is frustrating. The only way to get through this is to roll up your sleeves and do it all by yourself. Do not deal with matters that are none of your business. Before you do good consider the consequences.
If you need help, ask the ‘horse’. Don’t do important work in the month of the ox, 05 January 2019 – 04 February 2019.

Monkey(*) (1908, 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016):
It pays to make decisions and to commit to them. Changing horses midstream leads you astray. It is vital to know who can trust. Special care and mindfulness is advised in financial matters.
The year starts with the most challenging month, the month oft of the tiger. Use the time from 03 February 2018 – 05 March 2018 to built up steam slowly but steadily so you are ready to move on as soon as this month is over. Whenever you need a friend think of the ‘snake’ first.

Rooster(*) (1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017):
Socialising, enjoyment, and good times prevail. Financial difficulties can be avoided only through the support of advisers that have ‘integrity’ and ‘honesty’ as their trademarks. No step forward is better than one step back.
The month of the rabbit, 05 March 2018 – 04 April 2018, might be a little bit provoking. You better join forces with a ‘dragon’.

In the annual cycle the dog represents the end of autumn and he prepares us for the season of winter. The harvest should have been brought in by now, preparations should be made to get safely through the cold season. Nature is withdrawing and so should we. At least, we should slow down as it is not the right time for enormous advancements.

Looking at the dog through the eyes of the Traditional Chinese Medicine we must talk about a yang-earth/yang-earth constellation in which yin-fire and yin-metal are involved. Yang-earth represents the stomach, , yin-fire stands for the heart, blood and blood vessels, yin-metal for the lung.

Talking about yang-earth we ideally find us centred in ourselves, in peace and harmony with ourselves and with all around us. Solid as a rock, so to say, full of basic trust. But if we are not in a stable condition we might become mistrustful, sceptical, or even wicked. At all costs we want to preserve all that is dear to us, we might become undiscerning or seclude ourselves, sulking.

Fire is connected with joy and enthusiasm, on the negative side with agitation and restlessness. We should constantly reflect on our actions and activities. Not taking care of our own energy, not keeping our own strength and abilities in mind we can easily cross our own boundaries which then will lead us into exhaustion or even burn out.

We should know where our own limitations are and we should know how close we allow other people to come. Whatever comes too close we should hold at bay and keep sufficient distance. We should say “yes” only when we definitely want something. All the rest belongs to the category of “no”.

Remember: there is nothing like a vague “maybe”.

In our houses, apartments, shops and offices we should use the southeast extensively as it stands for success and progress. But leave the north alone. Keep this particular sector very quiet, refrain from building activities, earthworks and renovations. Do not do anything important or work on professional matters in the north.

For further assistance ask your Feng Shui consultant for advice. beyond that. We must become firm in our minds to control ourselves so that we pause whenever it is necessary, that we find appropriate ways to calm down when we see that we get carried away.

So commitment is what the dog wants to see from us, supporting us by adding that particular ingredient that soothes the conflict between fire and metal.

We definitely won’t have a boring year ahead of us. If we manage to find strength, peace and harmony in ourselves we will be strong enough to make the changes that are necessary. As soon as we have faith in ourselves and in what we are good at the dog will be a faithful companion who guides us through the year.

(*) for this kind of analysis we work with the solar calender. With a satisfying accuracy we can say that all years start on 04 February. This means that e.g. a person born on 31 January 1983 is born in the year of the dog as the year of the pig starts on 04 February 1983.
In consultations I certainly work with the exact dates and times.
